In the Periodic Table, lead is designated by the chemical symbol Pb, from its Latin name plumbum. It is a soft, blue-gray metal with good physical properties that have led to its use in many industries. Among other things, it is used in the production of lead paint, in the manufacture of ammunition and shot, batteries, accumulators, cables, pipes, ballast and many other products. Unfortunately, its toxicity means that lead can’t be used in the food industry and wherever it deals with food and drinking water. Lead accumulates in the human body and leads to a disease called leadosis. The element penetrates the human bloodstream, attaches itself to red blood cells, and partially penetrates soft tissues and bones. It can lead to hypertension and even brain damage. Therefore, lead should be handled very carefully, especially in scrap form.
